Kyle Blackburn To Play For Terre Haute Baseball Team In Prospect

TERRE HAUTE, Indiana – The Terre Haute Rex are coming off a 2014 campaign that brought in new ownership and team management. One of the most consistent teams in the Prospect League, the Rex claimed a pair of second-place finishes in both halves of the season. The club finished the year at a clip of 37-23.

The Rex finished the season leading the league in runs, runs batted in, and walks drawn, while ranking 3rd in both home runs and extra-base hits. The offense was led by centerfielder Manuel DeJesus, who led the PL in hits. Pitching finished 3rd in the PL in earned run average and 4th in batting average against. Early first half success qualified 10 Rex players to participate as representatives for the Western Division All-Star team.

With almost a completely new roster, the Rex have signed Camden, TN native Kyle Blackburn to roam the outfield this summer. The athletic 6’0, 200-pound outfielder at Austin Peay State University spent his first two years of college at Jackson State Community College (TN). As a sophomore, he batted .347 with a team-best 15 home runs and 50 RBI while recording 13 stolen bases. Blackburn was ranked third among all junior college hitters with his 15 home runs and was ranked fourth nationally with 22 times hit by pitch. As a freshman, he batted .297 with four home runs and 24 RBI.

“Kyle is a proven performer at a competitive level of junior college baseball,” said Terre Haute Rex Field Manager Bobby Segal. “Jackson State and Austin Peay State are both very well-run baseball programs and the amount of teaching and development he is encountering will only help him continue his playing career. With the amount of offensive production we lost from last season, I foresee Kyle stepping right into the middle of our line-up to consistently drive in runs and get on base. He will be a major part of our success this summer and we are excited to have him on our club.”

The former Camden Central High School standout is the son of Stan and Angie Blackburn and is a health and human performance major, with an emphasis in applied exercise science. The Rex begin their 2015 season Wednesday, May 27 at home against Kokomo. For more information, contact Jerry Arnold, Director of Broadcast Operations at (812) 243-4291.
