Football Game Highlights

Camden Lions Defeat Chester County Eagles 43-40

The Camden Lions waited until late in the second half to crank up the defense and outlast Chester County in a 43-40 region thriller at Wright Field. It was Senior night and the pregame festivities honored the Seniors on the team, cheerleaders, managers and band. The Seniors honored on Wright Field were: Shanisha Fitch, Crystal Mitchell, Jessica Burcham, Tiffany Ward, Sheena Rayburn, Jason Coleman, Shaun Borchert, Brock Martin, Shane Corbitt, Daniel Woodall, Ben Tinkle, and Ryne Haynie. Congratulations to these fine young men and women, as well as their families for their key contribution to this season and their excellent effort all year!

The refs are at mid-field for the coin toss, and all of the Senior players are there to back the team captains, Daniel Woodall, Ben Tinkle, and Ryne Haynie. They win and defer, and our receiving team is on the field thinking “Quick Start”! Maurice Gastelum takes the kick and sprints left for 15-yards and is finally dropped at our 44. The Lions offense starts with a screen pass from Senior QB Ben Tinkle to Senior wide receiver Ryne Haynie, a combination we have enjoyed all year! Ryne makes the right side line and is pushed out at the Chester County 49. Josh Boyd takes the handoff and is immediately hit in the backfield. A huge second effort breaks him free, and Josh makes a first down at their 41! Great job! The Eagles don’t like the way this is starting, and they take a time out to talk it over. Time in, we jump, and it’s first and 15 at the 46. Boyd gets three and the 2nd down play is stuffed for no gain. Ten minutes left in the first, and Ben Tinkle fakes the handoff into the line and throws a strike to Ryne Haynie slanting over the middle of the field. Ryne tucks the ball away and makes the five-yard line before he is stopped! The Lions offense can’t punch it in and the field goal attempt just misses, so the Eagles start on the 19.

The Eagle runners came to play, and 8 running plays later, the Eagle back is in the end zone. The kick is good, and with 3:12 left in the first they lead it 7-zip. Josh Guajardo runs the kick from inside the 20 to the 41, and the Lions offense take the field. Jesse Leonard takes the handoff from Tinkle and follows the block of Trevor Busby and Jeremy Stokes for a pickup of two. Josh Boyd grabs it, starts up the middle and makes three Eagles miss on an exciting 41-yard carry! First down Lions ‘way down at the 10-yard line! Josh Guajardo in motion right to left, he carries outside and is stopped at the 6-yard line! Josh again, and the offensive line clears a hole and he scores! Daniel Woodall snaps it to Brian Markham, Brian sets it up for Clay Carruth’s boot, and it is good! Tie game with 1:24 showing in the first.

Clay is pumped and he drills the kick deep left. The Eagle returner juggles the ball and finds the handle just in time to get drilled by Michael Long at the 24! Great stop! The big Eagle back busts the middle and carries ‘way down field. Just as a whole pack of Lions descend, the ball is on the ground and Kyle Moore recovers on the 33. First down Lions! Ben Tinkle throws the home run try deep to Ryne Haynie, but it is knocked incomplete. Boyd carries around right end, and he picks his way to the to the 30. The Lions use an unconventional formation and give the ball to Boyd for one. The first play of the 2nd quarter is a 4th down screen pass to Ryne Haynie outside left end, and Ryne makes a great run to the 11. First down Lions! Guajardo is stopped for no gain, and the fade to Ryne in the right corner of the end zone is incomplete. Tinkle throws the screen pass left to Josh Boyd only gains one. Time to try the field goal, the kick is away, and two Eagle defenders hammer Clay Carruth. The yellow linen flies, and it’s a Lions first down up at the six-yard line! That was just what the Lions needed, the give is to Josh Boyd as he hits the middle, waits on his blocks and flies over the goal line for six! Carruth had the toe warmed up, and it’s 14-7 CHS!

The Eagles start a 7-play scoring drive that ends with a 3-yard run over left guard. The kick is just high enough to sneak inside the left corner and it’s a tie game, 14 all. Five minutes left before the break when Shaun Borchert fields the pooch kick and downs it at the 40. Boyd off right tackle for a smooth eight-yard gain. Jesse Leonard busts the middle and it’s a first down at their 47! Josh Boyd makes left end, cuts and gains five before he is hit hard. 3:14 left, and the ball goes from Busby to Tinkle to Boyd to Haynie and Ryne cuts left, then right and left again for a “burners-on” first down at the 28! Great play, offense! Chester County takes a time out to try to regroup, but the Lions offense is crankin’. Josh doesn’t quite make the corner, but still makes a positive two gain. Tinkle sees the clock tick to 2:40, and throws a pass over the middle to a sliding Ryne Haynie! First down Lions at the 5! Just under two minutes showing as Josh Boyd sweeps left end and scores for a finish to our own 7-play scoring drive! Snap is good, hold is good, and Carruth’s kick splits the middle and it’s 21-14 Black and Gold!

The kick and a flag causes the Eagles to start ‘way back at the 20 with 1:47 left. They scratch for two time outs and the refs add some time back on, but Shawn French ends the half with a great sack at the 44, and Camden hits the field house up 21-14.

The Chester County band performs and the Camden High Black and Gold Marching Band performs for the last time on Wright Field for the 2002 season. The halftime activities end with the introduction of all of the “Miss Sorghum” Beauty Pageant winners. Special thanks to all of the young ladies that entered the pageant and all of the members of the Quarterback Club that helped! Paula Stokes special talents in organizing the event are especially appreciated, and the money that was raised will allow us to make the last payment on the Field House and cover some team meal expenses for this year. Thanks again!

The onside kick gives the Eagles a first down at our 31, and their first play from scrimmage was a delay handoff that allowed the back to suddenly appear ‘way down field. They set up for the kick, but a high-flying Ryne Haynie is aimed perfectly and blocks the extra point kick! Great job! 10:30 showing in the third, and we are clinging to a 1 point advantage, 21-20. The onside kick works again, and they start at our 44. The CHS defense needs a stop…

The big Eagle back picks his way thru the right side, waits on his blocks and running ‘way too good before Daniel Woodall can drop him at our 31. Illegal procedure moves them back to the 36 on the next snap, first and 15. When the Eagle runner starts right, Shawn French smothers him at the 38, 2nd & 17! The Eagles haven’t landed, and the ball is loose on the ground. They recover, and it is 3rd & 20 at the 43. They try a pass, and as the QB rolls right he is…distracted…by Lions everywhere! The pass falls incomplete and they are punting. Nice stop Defense! The ball rolls out at the 9, and the Lions offense is back on the field. The Lions are stopped after three plays, and after the punt run back the Eagles start at our 15. They score two plays later and it’s 26-21 Eagles. The two-point play looks ‘way too familiar, and Maurice Gastelum stays at home to dump the runner short of the goal.

Josh Guajardo runs the ball back to the 25, and Camden needs a score. Wright Field usually appears to be pretty level, but this drive makes it look like Josh Boyd and the Lions are running down hill! Haynie left for one. Tinkle’s pass to Ryne is good for a first down at our 35 with 3:08 showing. Josh Boyd is in motion right to left and he follows the blocks of Jeremy Stokes and John Hodge for seven yards. Josh starts right and slows to let the line bust some birds, and it’s a first down on their 42! Great run! Haynie in motion, takes the handoff from Tinkle, makes the cut for a gain of four. Ninety seconds left in the third, and Josh Boyd wades thru the middle, adds a great cut and scores! We are going for two, Ben Tinkle rolls right, looks into the end zone, tucks the ball away and flies into the end zone over the right pylon! CHS up 29-26!

Carruth’s kick is high and deep, and Brian Markham leads the stop at the 17. The Lions’ crank up the defensive pressure and stop the Eagles after six plays with Shawn French sacking the Eagles QB in the fourth quarter. Their punt is low and ugly and it rolls out at their 47. 9:49 left in the game and the Lions offense is ready to go. Josh Boyd makes the edge and cuts around left end for a gain of 7. Jesse Leonard on the quick dive up the middle for a first down at the 32. Boyd gets caught for a rare loss of one. Tinkle fakes the handoff to Boyd and gives it to Leonard and he drives for four. Tinkle pitches and Haynie catches it in the end zone for six! Clay’s kick is good and with 7:23 left to play, CHS is up 36-26!

The Eagles start at the 20, and Dennis Will makes the first stop after two. On second down, Corbitt and French stop the slanting runner after two yards. A recovered fumble seals the drive for the Eagles, and they are set to punt. No wait, they go for it and the run down the right sideline is finally stopped by Brian Markham at their 45. That keeps the drive alive, and six plays later they run it in. They take a time out, decide to go for two, and run it up the middle to make it a 36-34 ball game with 3:10 left.

The “Good Hands” team is on the field ready for the onside kick. Ryne Haynie comes up with the ball and is dropped at our 46. Great job! Josh Boyd bangs thru a huge hole in the middle and slants right. Another quick cut, and Josh runs for a huge first down at their 30. A “face mask” assist on the tackle moves it down to the 15 & a 1st down Lions! Boyd slides off tackle and dances thru traffic to the nine. The Eagles burn a time out to try to slow it down, but the rest was just what Josh Boyd needed. 2:20 left, Boyd in motion left to right, he spots a whole left by Justin Smith’s block, and dives in for the score! Carruth bangs it out of Markham’s hold and its 43-34 CHS.

The Eagles start at the 46 and put together a six-play scoring drive. The QB dives over the left pylon and makes it a 43-40 ball game. They kick it as far as the bottom bar of the goal post, it “boinks” against the bar and drops back onto Wright Field, no good! 58 seconds left and they are set for yet another onside kick. Ben Tinkle ends up with the ball and downs it at our 49. The Senior players come out of the game one at a time to receive the cheers of the Lions faithful, and two “Victory Plays” write it in the books as a 43-40 Lions victory! Congratulations to all of the players and coaches for a hard-fought win.

The next Quarterback Club meeting is Monday night, 4 November, in Coach David Fisher’s room at CHS. We need all members to attend so that we can finalize plans for the Banquet as well as discuss some financial matters. We appreciate everyone who has contributed to this season! Let’s close out the 2002 Club business with a good crowd at our meeting Monday!
