Individual honors for two members of the 2008 CHS Football team
Head football coach Kevin Ward presided over a press conference in the CHS library in order to congratulate two members his team. Andy Travis had been selected to play in the 2nd Annual Toyota East vs. West Tennessee All-Star Classic on December 13th in Jefferson City. Danny Kim was selected as a Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Award Finalist by the TSSAA & the winner will be presented on Monday, December 1, 2008 in Murfreesboro. Congratulations to both players & the support members of the team that assisted in their achievements!
Talking with Andy Travis about being selected to the West team as a defensive back:
“It is a great privilege to play in an All-Star game! There will be a lot of college scouts there & it is a great opportunity to get some exposure. It will also be an opportunity to play alongside some great talents from across the state. I look forward to a great time & appreciate this opportunity.”
On Andy’s plans after the All-Star game:
“I am looking to play football in college, really haven’t decided yet. Hope that this trip to East Tennessee might open up some opportunities.”
Talking with Danny Kim about his Mr. Football selection & 55 consecutive PAT kicks:
“I hope it will help me get a college scholarship. I didn’t expect the nomination; my parents didn’t even tell me about it! When I saw them at the school before the press conference, I asked “What are you doing here? It really shocked me when Coach Ward made the announcement! I am looking forward to the ceremony in Murfreesboro; it is an honor to even get nominated.”
On Danny’s plans after his senior year:
“I am looking to try to get into a college where I can play ball. I am looking to do the best I can & hope that there is a scholarship out there for me.”
Talking with Head Football Coach Kevin Ward about the individual honors:
“The individual honors really reflect on the personal hard work & commitment of them both. It means a lot to our football team as well, it is all positive exposure for our community & school. We announced Andy’s award first at the press conference, it made him one of about 45 players from the West portion of the state. Then we brought Danny up & told him he was a Mr. Football Finalist & the banquet would be in Murfreesboro with Mike Keith as the announcer. It really is an opportunity for the nominees to meet some of the people that are in the football business surrounding the NFL programs. It is a fun time for the kids & their parents. I am looking forward to Danny getting to experience that.”
On the East-West game (where Coach Ward will be acting as the Head coach for the West Team):
“They do a great job, allowing some time for the players to visit Gatlinburg & they really do a great job to make it a “bowl” atmosphere. Coach Matt Sturdivant will be coaching receivers for the West team, & it is an opportunity for him to be part of something as an assistant coach that usually is only done by head coaches. He’s excited about it & I am glad to have someone up there with me from my staff. We will only get four practices; two on Wednesday, two on Thursday, a walkthrough on Friday & a banquet. We will play Saturday. The game will be at Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, but the West team will be staying at Tusculum University in Greeneville, TN. We will use their indoor facility, if the weather is bad. The two universities really do a good job of rolling out the carpet for these players! It is an opportunity for them to see a lot of good players up close & recruit players that they might not ever have a chance on. The game will be on TV live, so it is going to be fun & an experience that we all will enjoy.”
Congratulations to Danny & Andy on their awards & best of luck to both Coaches on their All-Star game opportunity!
GO LIONS!
